Fall Concert, October 2 and 3

Our first concerts are in less than two weeks!  Our concerts are by far our biggest fundraisers and our most important activity.   We ask that each family invite at least five new friends who’ve never seen the concerts to attend. The money will go to the student scholarship fund, and the DSAO will garner new friends dedicated to the success of our program!

High School:

Study the score of the Mahler Adagietto. In addition become familiar with the history of the music. What did Mahler say about this movement?

Listen to the piece many times. Which version do you prefer?  Why? Become familiar with Mahler’s use of harmony. We will go over the harmony and structure in class. Your major assignment for the first quarter  is to make a tone map  of the Adagietto. If you are not familiar with tone maps, please look this up. This assignment will be due 10/16/15.

Dear students,

Infinite campus has been down all morning. As soon as it is restored, I will post playing test grades.

Remember: anyone can choose to retake the playing test!

For All Middle School and High School Orchestra Families:

Every year the orchestra students love coming together at the beginning of the school year for a weekend filled with team building activities, eating, and fun.  Our students go home exhausted but happy and ready to start the school year with their fellow students.  This weekend tradition has been named Wombat Weekend.

This year our wonderful Wombat Weekend experience will be held at Chatfield State Park from 1:00 p.m. on Saturday September 26, to 11:30 the following day, Sunday the 27th.  We will be at Group Campsites G & H.

Our students need our help to make this be a successful experience.  We will need volunteers to donate food, chaperone or drive our students, and let us borrow camping equipment.

Please deliver your students and any camping/food supplies to the park entrance on Roxborough Park Road, where volunteers will shuttle them to the campsite so that each family does not have to pay the park fees. Pickup on Sunday will be from the entrance as well.  Families who are not able to get to Chatfield that weekend should arrange for transportation from DSA by emailing Sue Rudoff, sue@rudoff.com. We look forward to a great time!

Complete Forms for off-campus activities

Please note the Power of Attorney and Consent for Emergency Care forms, and a copy of the medical insurance card must be completed and turned in for each student before they can attend Wombat Weekend or any off-campus overnight trip/event, even those events where parents are in attendance.  The Power of Attorney form requires both parents to sign and is required to be notarized. You may find a notary at your local bank, or you may contact either Tracy Holt in the main office or Linda Vliet in the counseling office and ask if they can notarize for you.  Both parents must be present to sign if not already completed. Please date both forms for the entire school year so you only have to do this once.  Otherwise you have to complete both for all trips/events.  These forms are available on the DSAO website  (Click Here).  Completed forms can be turned into the “forms” box that will be in the orchestra room once school starts.

If your student takes ANY medication, or has a medical condition, you MUST contact the Amy Robinson, the school nurse asap to complete more forms.

Thank you!

DSAO Partial Scholarships Available

for Midwest and ASTA

We want to make sure EVERY student attends these curricular trips. Our parent volunteers have worked very hard to get the best prices possible for travel and accommodations. Nonetheless we fully realize that these expenses are a true hardship for some of our families. Any DSAO student who is on a free or reduced lunch program automatically qualifies for a scholarship. For those who are not on this program and are experiencing hardship, please write an e-mail to Ms. Tracy Holt by September 25th, explaining the need for financial assistance from DSAO.

Fundraising Needs – You Choose

We need concession managers for upcoming concerts

Thank you to all who have signed up so far for concessions.  Please sign up here to find date(s) and time(s) that work for you to help out managing the concessions and merchandise sales at our concerts. These are great ways to help DSAO make money and raise funds during concert performances!

See this link for additional fundraising lead positions!
We all love our social media and we will use it to our greatest advantage to spread the word to family, friends and music-loving strangers who want to help our orchestra this year. Please VISIT, LIKE AND SHARE our DSAO Facebook Page which includes special messages about our fundraising needs this year and instructions on how to help. https://www.facebook.com/DSAOrchestra?fref=ts
Come one and all to participate in our 2015-2016 DSAO Fundraising and program activities! About half of our required operating funds comes from the family contribution at the beginning of the year, but in order to keep our Master Mentor and Visiting Artist programs functioning well all year, we still have work to do.
ALSO: We are not allowed to raise funds for travel expenses using our DSA Friends Foundation donation link (IRS rules). However, we are allowed to raise money through our other fundraising activities-King Soopers Cards, concessions, auctions, ticket sales.
Please join us by giving your time and talent in a way that works for you and your family.

Please visit these websites and become more acquainted with the competitions that our students have successfully qualified for this year.

Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music and Ithaca College School of Music

to present at DSA!

DSA Community,
Denver School of the Arts has a unique opportunity on the evening of September 22nd, 7pm, to have admissions presentations from the Eastman School of Music, Ithaca College, and the Julliard School. This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to learn about these schools and programs in our concert hall.  For further details on this event, please have your students click here

. It would be very helpful if you could encourage students to register in advance through the link above.

Interested in majoring in music?  Come and participate in a panel discussion with the admissions deans at three major music schools to learn about careers in music. Find out how to choose and apply to a school, audition, navigate the financial aid process, and more! Following the panel discussion, there will be a mini college fair with the three presenting schools plus a fourth school from the local area. Students, parents, and teachers are invited.

Master Mentor/Visiting Artist Program

If you have not already set up a contribution, we wanted to remind you about the $350 fee,  per family,  for our Master Mentors program.  This is an expectation for all DSAO families.

Contributions can be made by check or through the DSA Friends Foundation at www.dsafriends.org.  If you can’t make the payment all at once, please do so in monthly installments.   Please make checks payable to DSA Friends Foundation, and put “Orchestra family contribution” or “master mentor” in the memo line.  Please give checks to Tracy Holt in the main office.

This is also a fantastic way for family and friends to support your student! Please pass along the dsafriends.org website link to those you know are interested in supporting our programs.

For further information, please visit the OFA Fundraising website.

Volunteer Positions

Please visit this page to see if you can help with some of our open positions. It really does take a village, so let’s share the responsibility and help our kids!

Please sign up here to help with Visitation Days for prospective students!

No contribution is too small.  Every minute of volunteer time is valuable and appreciated.

Investing in DSAO

Advertising in the Concert Brochure

We’d love your help to secure community support for DSAO visiting artists and travel!  If you are ready to roll up your sleeves, check out our updated concert ad brochure.  Businesses or families can take out ads that appear for the entire season (4 concerts) or just once as a note of congratulations.
Please put “Advertising”  in the subject line and contact dsaorchestra1@gmail.com.  This is also a good way to put a personal message of congratulations for your student, to be displayed in the program.

Schedule a House Party

Schedule a house party featuring DSAO musicians and ask the attendees to support  this year’s trips.  It’s a fun and easy way to introduce friends, family and community to the excellence of our program and could garner DSAO fans for years to come.

 Buy groceries, support DSAO

Make sure you purchase a reloadable King Soopers card! It’s simple to get started with a $2.50 card.  Each time you reload the card, DSAO gets 5% back! Everyone buys groceries, so it a very easy way for friends and family to contribute as well. You may email Carol Fennell for information about purchasing a card.

DSA is collecting Boxtops!

DSA receives free money for each box top turned in.  Please group the box tops in a bag or envelope, and mark them with “Orchestra” so that the funds will come to us.  The collection box is located in the main office.
