A Month of Great Performances

Dear Orchestra Parents and Students,

I know that there are so many things happening with DSAO this year that it’s hard to keep up!

Nonetheless, I want to call attention your attention to three major events that are coming up this month. Students are required to attend either Red Riding Hood or the Moscow Quartet concert, as well as the Chamber Concert:

  1. Red Riding Hood: We have 25 DSA students in the orchestra, hired to play the musical “Red Riding Hood”  with the  renowned Family Theater Company. I want to encourage you to attend one of the performances on: Nov. 14,15. We want to do a great job and to support Family by having a substantial presence in the audience!  If students attend the Family musical they will not be required to attend the Moscow Quartet this semester. The production will be charming and very well suited to family audiences. Our students are being paid $100/each for their participation. In short we really want to be invited back for future collaborations!
  2. Moscow Quartet: Date has changed to 11/13.  Required unless student attends “Red Riding Hood” (see above).
  3. Chamber Concerts: Students and Mentors have worked very hard this semester TO PRODUCE WONDERFUL CHAMBER MUSIC!  We have cancelled the November 20 (Friday night) concert, and so the concert is on Saturday, November 21 at 3p. ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF THEIR INVOLVEMENT  ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND. This is the best way for students to support each other, build camaraderie and listen to a beautiful assortment of music!

Fundraising Committee Meeting
Nov. 9, 6p

Come one and all to participate in our 2015-2016 DSAO Fundraising and program activities! About half of our required operating funds comes from the family contribution at the beginning of the year, but in order to keep our Master Mentor and Visiting Artist programs functioning well all year, we still have work to do.
ALSO: We are not allowed to raise funds for travel expenses using our DSA Friends Foundation donation link (IRS rules). However, we are allowed to raise money through our other fundraising activities-King Soopers Cards, concessions, auctions, ticket sales.
Please join us by giving your time and talent in a way that works for you and your family.
See this link for additional fundraising lead positions!
We all love our social media and we will use it to our greatest advantage to spread the word to family, friends and music-loving strangers who want to help our orchestra this year. Please VISIT, LIKE AND SHARE our DSAO Facebook Page which includes special messages about our fundraising needs this year and instructions on how to help. https://www.facebook.com/DSAOrchestra?fref=ts
Please visit these websites and become more acquainted with the competitions that our students have successfully qualified for this year.

EOP String Competition
November 14 & 15
MSU Denver

Application Due Nov 5

Please see website for rules, repertoire and application information (CLICK HERE).

The first annual EOP String Competition is open to all violin, viola, and cello students between the ages of 8-18 studying classical music. The EOP Competition is presented in collaboration with the string department of the Metropolitan State University of Denver and will be held in the spectacular King Center on the MSU campus on Saturday, November 14th and Sunday, November 15th.

The purpose of this competition is to provide young string students throughout the Colorado Front Range area an opportunity to compete within their own instrumental and age groups. Unlike most other competitions for young instrumentalists, violinists will compete with violinists, cellists with cellists, etc. Winners within each group will have the opportunity to perform in a winner’s recital at the King Center Concert Hall as well as receive a small cash prize. All competitors are invited to a performance given by the string faculty at MSU Denver as well as other programs and instructional opportunities that will be presented throughout the two-day event.

First Annual Winter Concert Silent Auction

December 12-13

With the holidays around the corner, we are excited about raising funds for trips through auctioned baskets at our December 12 and 13th concert.

We are asking each family to be creative and come up with two donations in the theme for your grade. Baskets/donations are Due December 4th  to the orchestra dept, so we have time to wrap and label them.  This is your chance to let your creativity shine.  These themes can be flexible, so if you have an idea different than your grade, go for it!  Perhaps you want to babysit for three hours, give a lesson, play an hour at an event, or have a condo you can share for two nights….those are great! Please fill out the application form (CLICK HERE) when you bring in your baskets.

Thank you for your support for our amazing students!!

Moscow Quartet
Friday, Nov 13, 7p

“Described by Alfred Schnittke as ‘an extraordinary ensemble that distinguishes itself with refined musical style, an unusually beautiful sound, and a tremendous artistic temperament’, the Moscow String Quartet has emerged as one of the major Russian chamber ensembles of today.”

The Moscow String Quartet is a DSAO treasure.  In 2011, they played to rave reviews during a national tour celebrating the birthday of Russian composer Sofia Asgatovna Gubaidulinawho had been encouraged along her “mistaken path” of contemporary music by Shostakovich.

Their upcoming concert will include Haydn, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, and will feature a trio with guest pianist Anna Arzumanian, who performed an amazing Taneyev Quintet at DSAO earlier this year.  Arzumanian graduated from Yerevan State Conservatory, Armenia. As a soloist with Armenia State Orchestra she was a laureate of many world recognized competitions like “Amadeus.”

Moscow Quartet:
Eugenia Alikhanova – 1st Violin
Galina Kokhanovskaia – 2nd Violin
Tatiana Kokhanovskaia – Viola
Olga Ogranovitch – Cello

Master Mentor/Visiting Artist Program

If you have not already set up a contribution, we wanted to remind you about the $350 fee,  per family,  for our Master Mentors program.  This is an expectation for all DSAO families.

This is also a fantastic way for family and friends to support your student! Please pass along the dsafriends.org website link to those you know are interested in supporting our programs.

Schedule a House Party

Schedule a house party featuring DSAO musicians and ask the attendees to support  this year’s trips.  It’s a fun and easy way to introduce friends, family and community to the excellence of our program and could garner DSAO fans for years to come.

 Buy groceries, support DSAO

Make sure you purchase a reloadable King Soopers card! It’s simple to get started with a $2.50 card.  Each time you reload the card, DSAO gets 5% back! Everyone buys groceries, so it a very easy way for friends and family to contribute as well. You may email Carol Fennell for information about purchasing a card.

DSA is collecting Boxtops!

DSA receives free money for each box top turned in.  Please group the box tops in a bag or envelope, and mark them with “Orchestra” so that the funds will come to us.  The collection box is located in the main office.
