Trip Planning: 2017-2018

Denver School of the Arts
Orchestra Travel in 2017-2018
Dear DSA Orchestra Parents / Guardians,

As another school year speeds toward its conclusion after Spring Break, we are excited to announce that the DSAO Travel Committee has been actively working on itineraries we hope to roll out in the next month for both High School and middle school. Ultimately, we want all of our families to make it a goal to save toward next year’s trips individually. Also, with the help of the DSAOFundraising team-now and in the future- we should be thinking collectively about how to fundraise for travel as a group to buy down travel costs for everyone and/or provide scholarships for eligible students. It is our goal to ensure that all students in the orchestra are able to attend.

Why Do We Travel?
There is nothing like domestic and international travel to open one’s eyes, challenge perceptions, and discover one’s place in the world.  Your child will step outside the classroom and the auditorium and engage with the world firsthand, go beyond his/her comfort zone and experience new foods, cultures, and people. These incredible opportunities will help your child navigate new situations with a broader global perspective, build self-confidence, give him/her a life changing experience, and experiencing all of it with their friends!

General Travel Costs
For local travel to out of city concerts which require an overnight stay, plan to spend about $150-$250 per student for those opportunities. In the past these have included CMEA, All-State, and Western States Honors Orchestra.

For domestic out of state travel, these are usually 4-5 night trips. This type of travel is applicable to both middle and high school orchestras.
Trip Cost: $1,300
The cost of these trips includes festival fees, air, accommodations, included meals (usually breakfast and a lunch), ground transportation, and instrument rental (for larger instruments)

International travel is applicable only to the Advanced (high school) orchestra. We have been working through rough itineraries to various locations to get a general cost outline with World Strides On Stage Programs, a proven and renown leader in student travel, and one particularly well suited to music-based and performance travel.
Potential travel dates: March 18-25, 2018Please note this is a week prior to Spring Break for families interested in making an international trip part of their spring break itinerary.
Program cost per student: $3,200-$3,600 Trip costs include roundtrip international air, accommodations, usually 2 meals per day, instrument rental (for larger instruments), ground transportation, and festival/concert fees.
Other costs: Additional meals, personal spending, travel insurance (required to travel), souvenirs, and other incidentals bring the total cost of an international trip to about $4,000 per student/participant.

What’s Next?
Toward the middle-end of May, we will send out a letter and schedule a travel meeting just before school ends to discuss potential trips. At that meeting, should we have a defined trip outlined, we will very likely be taking deposits of $50 per student to hold space on the trip(s), and discussing the chaperone application and requirements process, required forms, and general DSAO travel rules.
